With no brothers, 8-year-old Mei Mei is the first female in the family to be taught how to butcher. First step is gutting and cleaning the endless yards of the pig's intestines.

Wintertime is tough for the Gejia people in Guizhou, China's poorest province. However, with Chinese New Year right around the corner, there is reason to celebrate and butcher one of only two pigs. Freshly killed, Mei Mei's father and uncles clean and shave the pig with boiling water
