Our trip to Sri Lanka would not have been so special had it not been for two people. These two people helped us understand Sri Lanka and travel around it. They are both reliable, honest, trustworthy and nice people. I can't say enough about their service.

First is Nimal De Silva of Mother Earth Nature Tours. I found him from this discussion on the Lonely Planet web site and emailed him directly at nimal(at)mother.earth-srilanka.com. He picked us up from the airport and reserved our room for the first night, along with treating us very well. Though he could not be our driver (schedule conflict) he worked hard to find an honest driver for our trip and designed the perfect itinerary for us. Nimal is highly recommended if you're going to Sri Lanka - he knows his stuff and will be honest. This is he and Sachi:

The second person is Mervyn Perera, who Nimal set us up with as our driver. We had no idea what to expect from Mervyn, but he turned out to be one of real highlights of our trip. He is a safe, courteous, reliable and very friendly driver, but more than that, Mervyn is a great person who knows a lot about Sri Lanka. I am a Sri Lankan. I live in Colombo. I thank you, for taking an interest in our little island home. I stumbled upon your journal by accident, but i am pleased that I did. I must however also add that the more western side of Sri Lanka and the more developed side is clearly visible in the major cities of Sri Lanka. Such as Colombo, Kandy and even gale. I would also like to advise you on some locals who are out to take advantage of foreigners. As in every society, there’d always be that click of people who are out to ruin the good name of our people. Just be very strict with them and, always try to bargain your way through. If you are interested in the night life, we have some good clubs in Colombo which are usually crowded with foreigners including Americans. If you are interested in wild life, Yala is a fantastic place to go to. The beaches in Trincomalee are absolutely stunning and if you like to relax and enjoy a climate close to that of your own county, I’d suggest Nuwera-Eliya. Kandy is a good place to go if you would like to know more about the Sri Lankan culture. If u are interested in tasting a bit of Sri Lankan history, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruva would fascinate you. As I am looking for a driver in Sri Lanka and was said that a driver from Kandy (working with Mrs Pipi) named Perera was the man I should get in touch with, please tell me if Mervyn Perera is from Kandy?
