Celebrating cultures To travel is not only about seeing exotic places or taking photos of famous landmarks, it should also be about experiencing and exploring different cultures.

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

South Africa | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

To travel is not about arriving at a destination, but to experience every step of the journey. During a pilgrimage in Spain I have gained not only insight into the world, but into myself. The road since has taught me that a journey does not need to be in a foreign country, but a journey can fit into a single day and the destination can be as simple as your pillow. Observe, understand and capture. This is how I experience every day life. By looking around me, I can see so many stories being told in people's faces and day-to-day activities. I'm a 24 year-old South African journalist and amateur photographer. With both skills I try to tell the stories of other people's lives and about what matters to them. The written word is as mighty as a sword, but a picture can tell a thousand stories. I believe solemnly in both mediums, but I have experienced that words can be manipulated and written to suit the writer. Photographs on the other hand are true, unless you use Photoshop to add in your uncle who could not attend the family reunion. A travel experience in Greenland will give me the opportunity to learn about a country that I will tell stories about for years to come.
