A Beautiful Way

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 28, 2011 | 4 photos

Hello. My name is Lachlan Brown. I am 19 years old. I am from Perth in Western Australia. Currently, I am studying Economics at the University of Melbourne.

After high school, I decided to take a year off. During this time, I earned enough money to travel throughout South East Asia, a geographical gem and cultural hub that has completely captivated my passion for travel. I spent a combined 10 months in South East Asia, volunteering at various language schools and animal shelters.

I found my underlying interest in photography gradually. In Asia I was exposed to incredible visual experiences which I wanted to capture and share with my friends and family back home.

I began to experiment with my standard, but trustworthy, digital camera.

Through my set of four photographs, I aimed to explore a memoir of my travels, capturing the uniqueness and unruliness prevalent in various cultures so different, yet so close to Australia.

Currently looking to invest in my first SLR camera, photography is an interest I want to pursue. I know, however, any pursuit requires time, energy and persistence—trifling costs outweighed by the benefits of the art.

To me, photography is a chance to tell a story: a way of expressing your adventures and thoughts. I believe that the best photographs are earned, by which I mean rewarding photographs only derive from exploration, persistence and confidence.

Through this scholarship and my own personal photography, I want my work to embody an emotional channel, conveying desperation, joy, and serenity in the viewer. I want people to feel my photographs. I want to change the way people view a person, a place, a concept—or the world entirely.

Photography offers a medium for transformation, a medium I would love to explore to its fullest potential.
