My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Iceland | Sunday, June 30, 2013 | 4 photos

At 17, I found an atlas at a charity shop and became fascinated by the maps inside. At 18, I set out on my first trip abroad. Since, I've traveled the world volunteering and studying. I am now completing a BA in Geography and Spanish, and a Minor in Env. Science.
I realize I am blessed, and many people will never witness the natural splendors I have stood in awe of. I wish to give back from my vast experiences. Photography is a platform to inspire others to see their world. In these volatile times, a photo of a retreating glacier or isolated Indigenous village can spread awareness of precious natural resources and communities on the brink of extinction.
Upon seeing a landscape or culture, I hope to capture the emotion and awe on film. Photographing cultures is as crucial as landscapes, however, I lack confidence in approaching people as photographic subjects and desire learning how this relationship is formed. Photographing human marks on nature is another fascination of mine and the focus of my entry photos. Improving all aspects of my amateur skills would provide me the ability to share the world and raise awareness of the vulnerability of people and places rarely seen.
