This country is so diverse, how to fit three totally different areas in two days!! Rio Dulce...staying in huts over the river of Rio Dulce. Swimming in the pool and the river, drinking cheap as cocktails and listening to howler monkeys..howl. Then taking a boat cruise through the villages, canyons (where the original tarzan was filmed) passing little kids trying to sell stuff, looking for manatees (didnt see any, but saw brown pelicans) water lilies and the big boats of the rich Guatemalans to Livingston on the Caribean with rasta dudes and church singing.
Flores..only a night stop but a small circular island on the waterfront. Then driving to Tikal, one of the biggest Mayan ruins in central america, listening to Toucans, spider and howler monkeys, cicads and climbing the ruins to overlook the jungle where star wars was filmed .
Unfortunately Guatemala was put under marshall law while we were there as 27 innocent people had been shot in a drug raid. So lots more cops and military with guns. But didnt affect us and we passed without incident to Belize. We also passed wandering pigs, horses and chickens. Just a standard fare of Guatemala
