Quito, Ecuador

ECUADOR | Monday, 8 October 2007 | Views [432]

Flew to Lima, Peru and then transfered to a flight for Quito, Ecuador. The flight from Akl to Santiago was full of Latin Americans and all I heard was spanish but the flight to Quito was very different, mostly tourists. On both flights I happened to sit next to post retirement Aussies, full of tips on where to go and what to see.

When I arrived in Quito all the traffic lights were out and the roads were a bit chaotic. Later I was to discover that drivers here are a bit loco (crazy) anyway. Yellow lines and zebra crossings are apparently on the roads for decorative reasons. Overtaking to near death is ok as long as you beep the horn. Admitedly they do manage to control their vehicles well on curvy highways probably because they live in the mountains and all.

Strangely, I noticed a number of people here like to whistle that nurse tune from Kill Bill. Either it´s off a popular song, the movie was popular, or they´re just freaky.

Quito is an interesting unique city. Built on hills. Old town is particularly nice. Skinny streets and colonial buildings. Didn´t get to look around enough though so I´ll have to come back later.
