Altitude sickness

BOLIVIA | Tuesday, 30 October 2007 | Views [439]

La Paz : either you step off the plane and admire the magnificent view or you crumple to a heap and have to be scrapped off the tarmac.

It turns out that La Paz is the highest capital in the world at an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) and something that every newcomer to the city seems to dread is the risk of altitude sickness.

Christiane went through a battery of tests to see if it would happen to her. Treadmills, heart monitors, oxygen deprivation, you name it. Fortunately for us, she passed with flying colors.

...at least someone out of the group will be able to hail stretchers for the rest of us.

(This is a update, thanks for your comments, I stand corrected!) "The airport is at an altitude of 4050m. Another tip is to drink more than you do usually, because the air here is very dry (less than 35% of humidity) and due to the altitude you have to breathe more, thus loosing more water through expired air."
