Round The World Adventures "The rewards of the journey far outweigh the risk of leaving the harbour"

The Warm Heart of Africa

Hi everyone

After leaving Zimbabwe we drove through Mozambique for two days to
get into Malawi.  The first night we camped in Mozambique by the
Tete Bridge over the Zambezi River.  We were mobbed by all these
local children in the campsite.  Got a good couple of photos
surrounded by these kids who didn't speak any English.  They were
adorable!

Malawi was a fantastic country to visit.  It really is the warm
heart of Africa.  The people are so friendly and
welcoming....there's something about the African smile...beautiful
white teeth exposed by these smiles a mile wide.  It makes you feel
warm and fuzzy inside!  We camped by Lake Malawi about 4 nights in
total, beside a sandy shore.  There are small waves on the lake
quite often and it's so massive it's so easy to mistake it for the
ocean, except it's fresh water.  We visited a local village and
seeing the school and local health clinic sadly lacking in supplies
made you feel helpless.  Malawi seems to be getting a lot of aid
already particularly from the European Union but doesn't seem that
evident in the small villages.  On our last night in the same
village at Kande Beach, we had a village meal sitting on mats on the
ground; sweet potato soup, beef stew, cassava bread, beans, spinach
and rice.  It was a delicious meal.  Then some local children
entertained us with singing and dancing and we all had a turn
dancing one-on-one with a boy or girl...hilarious!  A definite
highlight for me was when 6 young boys stripped their shirts off and
performed the haka!  It was absolutely brilliant and made me feel a
bit emotional.
We bought a few carvings and souvenirs in Malawi after doing a bit
of bargaining.  Some 'businessmen' were more astute than others and
after becoming friendly with them it was hard to be a ruthless
bargainer!  I'm sure they could do with the money anyway.  They were
really keen to trade clothes, footwear, sunglasses, bags,
hats...anything really as it's too expensive for them to buy the
same things in Malawi.  I didn't trade anything as I'm travelling
pretty light as it is.
Malawi was yet another wonderful part of Africa which I will never
forget.
