- The best way to get across the road is to just go… step out and let the motorbikes do the dodging. (Cars, on the other hand must be treated with a little more respect. Cars do not dodge.
- Sleep is good. Preferably 8 hours in a nice quiet, air conditioned room, but napping on buses and trains is a great way to pass the hours too.
- Squat loos are much easier to negotiate in a skirt. BYO toilet paper & hand sanitizer.
- Having a hotel pre-booked takes a whole lot of stress out turning up in a strange new town; just get off the bus & find a tuk tuk driver who knows where he’s going.
- Be OK with getting ripped off occasionally.
- Beggars are people too; you can’t always give them something, but a smile is free – the least you can do is acknowledge their existence.
- No one ever has change for $100.
- It’s fine to slow down, do less and occasionally hide in your hotel room for an afternoon – travel shouldn’t be about ticking off a to-do-list
- Asking for chicken at a local restaurant might get you more than you bargained for. (I ate what I think was the liver, ‘cause people do that… but the heart & lungs floating in my soup… ah, no thanks)
- And most important of all: If you don’t know, ask.
