Hermannsburg, NT

The Hermannsburg mission was established by the German Lutheran pastors Kempe and Schwarz in 1877 on the traditional lands of the Western Aranda people. It is 130km southwest of Alice Springs.

This church was built in 1897 after the original was destroyed in heavy rains. It features an inscription in English, German and Aranda.

The missionaries abandoned the site in 1891, broken by extreme isolation and family illness. This abandonment would be temporary, with a new mission established within three years.
