    In 1982 control of the Mission lands were restored to the traditional Aranda owners. The tools and buildings abandoned, it has become a tourist destination without tourists. A bleak and empty site within a troubled township. by: kimpreston Views[320] The missionaries sought to provide training and employment in their Tannery, Shearing shed and Smithy. by: kimpreston Views[401] Boys dormitory at the edge of the Mission’s perimeter. by: kimpreston Views[372] Constructed in 1896, this schoolhouse continued to teach local Aboriginal children, in both English and Aranda, until 1953. by: kimpreston Views[344] The Hermannsburg mission was established by the German Lutheran pastors Kempe and Schwarz in 1877 on the traditional lands of the Western Aranda people. It is 130km southwest of Alice Springs. This church was built in 1897 after the original was destroyed in heavy rains. It features an inscription in English, German and Aranda. The missionaries abandoned the site in 1891, broken by extreme isolation and family illness.
