My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

As teenagers we were aware of the town’s perceived ugliness. We could see it formalized in the built environment and we could feel it harboured in the attitudes of many of the residents. 'The childhood home of one of my dearest friends. Along with having the space for a backyard the suburban shed might be considered one of the luxuries afforded to those living in the outer suburban sprawl.'

This series of photographs investigates altered perceptions of place over time. Every time I re-visit the town I grew up in it feels different. The modest suburban town has always been of lower socio-economic value and hasn’t been able to shake its abrasive reputation. 'New donut marks around a pole in a car park that used to be a common location for late night drag races.'

Visiting these places now I can’t help but reflect on my environmental upbringing with a romanticised cadence. 'James has recently purchased his first property. I met him on his day off; shooting targets in the backyard.'
