    Letters of Protest, sent in response to every nuclear test in every country. At the time that I took the photograph 606 letters had been sent. These letters have been sent by successive mayors of Hiroshima since 1968. Each time a letter is sent, the mayor hopes it will be the last. Views[191] The Memorial Cenotaph is situated near the centre of the Peace Park; and holds all the names of those killed. The monument is designed to align with the Peace Flame and the A Bomb Dome as illustrated in my photograph. It was one of the first to be build in what was once an open field and opened in 1952. The arch shape used represents a shelter for the souls of the victims. Views[203] The Peace Flame another memorial to those that lost their lives as a result of the atomic bomb. It has a further symbolic purpose. The flame has burned continuously since it was lit in 1964. And will remain lit until all nuclear bombs have been destroyed. Views[222] The Children's Memorial standing in memory of all the children who lost their lives as a result of the atomic bombing. Originally inspired by Sadako Sasaki who was exposed to the radiation from the bomb and developed leukaemia. Her aim was to fold 1000 paper cranes, to have her wish granted, for world peace. Unfortunately she lost her battle before she could finish her cranes, her friends finished them for her. To this day anyone can offer their own paper crane in memory of those children that died. During my visit I left my own origami crane as tribute. Views[216] The A Bomb dome, the most recognisable Hiroshima landmark, preserved as a memorial to those that lost their lives as a result of the nuclear bomb. Public opinion was divided on whether the building should have been demolished along with the rest of the city or preserved as a reminder of the devastation. Ultimately the decision was taken to preserve the skeletal remains and build the Peace Park around it. Views[175]
