Got the car back just in time to Melbourne, even though I drove over the pavement right outside the hire company. They didn't notice. Saturday night we went out in Brunswick Street with our new Irish friends Grace and Kathryn - they're good craic! Had a few too many jam donut shots so felt very rough the following day. Got out of bed in time for Moonlight Cinema - an outdoor cinema in the Botanic Gardens. A possum ran right past me - I thought it was a cat at first. Never been to the cinema and had that happen before!
We've been job hunting for most of this past week which has been tedious but we did have the strangest interview ever together. It was for a promotions company and the Londoner who interviewed us both at the same time was like an older Darren McLeod in a Louis Vuitton tie. The blurb from their flyer says: as a marketing entity, we provide a human commercial, individualized for every customer and culture.' Any clearer? neither were we. We were invited back for an 'observation day' but as we were both so confused about what the job was, we gave it a miss!
Charlotte then got pretty ill thanks to Rebecca, our roommate who was struck down with flu that week too. So we had a pretty quiet week as I started to get sniffly too. By Sunday night the two of us were exhausted so headed to bed early. We had moved hostels by this point, and were now in a 4-bed dorm at Metro YHA (cleaner than the Nunnery, with better facilities, though less Jesus memorabilia). I'd been sleeping with my ear plugs in as American Annie in the bunk below had 'sinus problems' but luckily my ear plugs were useless because I heard Charlotte shout out to me to get out of bed and help her. It was 4.30am and I found her sitting on the room floor with blood pouring out of her forehead. She'd got up to go to the bathroom as she felt sick and passed out there, knocking her head on the sinks in the process. It was so scary but I remained calm (god knows how, must have been all those episodes of Greys Anatomy I watch) and took her in a taxi to the hospital. I told the night manager what had happened and that the toilets on the second floor would need to be cleaned and he just looked blankly back at me and offered me a bandage from his first aid kit. Thanks.
We went to St Vincents emergency room and were seen straight away. The man in the bed next to us was groaning loudly. Either in pain or by pleasure we couldn't tell! Charlotte got upset when they told her she'd need stitches as she hates needles, but they anaesthatised (spel) the area so it was just like getting botox.
The strange thing was, earlier that day we had venture out for fish and chips. Charlotte squeezed the tomato ketchup sachet and it splattered all over her face. She later stitched up her trousers before bed in time for her catering interview...premonition?
Needless to say we got back to the hostel and they hadn't cleaned the blood up. At half ten I went down to reception to remind them, as only a sign had been put up telling everyone not to panic, someone had fainted and the blood would be cleaned first thing. Yet no one had told housekeeping. So disappointing as the hostel is the cleanest we've been in so far!
My new friend Anna met me the next day and I was telling her about Charlotte, she said she went into the bathroom about 5am, saw the blood and a handprint on the door leading to the showers. So scary. She was the one who had to put the sign up to stop everyone else from getting a shock, the night manager refused to go into the ladies. Useless.
So that was a bit of a shock for us but thankfully Charlotte is on the mend and will get her stitches out in time for St Patricks Day.
We're currently now still hunting for jobs but have an apartment sorted moving in beginning of April. It's a two bed so sharing with Grace and Kathryn which is just brilliant. It's for two months and we have a pool and a gym in the building, plus TV, DVD player, computer and internet. I'll have an address! And a bathroom I can leave my toothbrush in, instead of carrying it around in my washbag. It's the small things that make all the difference.
Reading: Just finished My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Highly recommend it. Now on to Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood.
Listening to: Britney everywhere and signs for Charlotte getting up to the toilet in the night. American Annie and her sinus problems have thankfully gone.
Moaning about: not having a job
Loving: the thought of getting a job, hopefully in French Connection.
Missing: catching up with friends for a drink, Tescos and Marks and Spencer (the tights here are so expensive!)
