A young girl stares at her image in the mirror before sampling beauty products at a department store. In Tokyo, the pressure to look like everyone else is impossible to escape and stretches beyond young girls. Just as haircuts, for men and women, change with the season, so do eyelash length and eye shadow color.

A single man sits at a bar near a neighborhood train station on a work night. Most Japanese companies encourage, if not require, drinking at business functions, and it is not uncommon for business men to develop alcohol addictions. The stress of working long days and placing one's company before one's family may be contributing factors.

A woman living out of a cardboard box shines the shoes of passing businessmen on the streets of Tokyo. Though the streets and train stations are crowded with homeless people after 10 p.m., the majority of Tokyo's homeless disassemble their cardboard homes during the day.
