Damn Rebel I've been car-jacked in Barcelona, lost in the Alps and harassed by fake police in Cuba. Yet, I continue to remind myself that adventure was, after all, what I set off in search of.

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Cuba | Thursday, January 10, 2013 | 5 photos

In 2011 I made a radical change to my life. I sold my house in the Shetland Islands (Scotland), gave away my possessions and set off in my VW Golf on nothing but a hunch that I can make a life based on travelling, photography and writing. I am now based in Spain and am a student on the MatadorU travel writing and photography programmes. I want to record the real, ordinary and extraordinary, aspects of a country's culture and people. I am also interested in natural history and recently travelled to Cuba, where I drove on my own around the country photographing birds, landscape and culture. I learnt a huge amount simply by experimenting. However, I would like to push myself further by travelling with Jason Edwards. I know I have much to learn. I am dissatisfied with travel photography that simply records a person's exotic 'otherness' and want to explore how to photograph people in a more meaningful way. I would also like to develop my technical skills so that I can make good decisions quickly and shoot people naturally, capture events as they happen and nature in motion. I hope that the change I made in life demonstrates my commitment to this work and that I would be an enthusiastic, diligent learner.
