My first solo lesson! A bit of a challenge because I can't think of any reason why kids need to know about Roman Numerals. I prepare nine quizzes in order of easy to hard thinking 'How can I fill an entire hour with this?'
Ice-breaker
Me: Does anyone know where the Romans were from?
Yes! Everyone yells.
Me: Where were they from?
Chirp chirp, chirp chirp...
Me: They were From Italy. Does anyone know what Italy is?
Yes! Everyone yells.
Me: What is Italy?
Chirp chirp, chirp chirp...
Finally a small voice whispers, "A continent?"
Me: No, it's a country. Does anyone know what continent Italy is in?
Chirp chirp, chirp chirp...
You get the picture.
QUIZ 1
Name the Roman Numerals from 1 to 10.
To my surprise the kids are jumping over each other to get to the board. If they get to the board and they don't know the answer they wait a few seconds until the rest of the class yells it out. They get them 100% correct.
Okay, now everyone draw a clock, but with Roman Numbers on it.
85% get this immediately, but sadly the remainder take thirty minutes to draw a circle, and most have the numbers backwards. Too late for anything else, it's time for lunch.
