Hidden Beauty: Exploring the State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Seventeen acres of cultivated gardens and 296 acres of mixed hardwood forests encompass the garden. Instead of searching the forest for food, this Gray Squirrel feasts on a sunflower while concealing his mischief beneath a leaf.

The Timber Rattlesnake, a rare visitor, could not use its typical camouflage to hide on the garden’s pristine grass. I took a few minutes to photograph him at eye level before he hid in a water drain directly behind me. Since Timber Rattlesnakes are venomous, the snake later was safely escorted by animal control to a home away from the busy garden.

Angel’s Trumpet is a beautiful and very fragrant flower but is highly toxic. The six to eight inch long trumpet shaped flowers can be recognized by their downward opening which unfurl as the sun sets. The true hidden beauty of the flower can be found in its pinwheel appearance when the bloom closes as the sun rises.
