DAY 60. Christmas Cookies & Kids

NEW ZEALAND | Sunday, 25 December 2016 | Views [241]

We woke up to Michael, the kid's dad from yesterday walking by our tents saying Merry Christmas and since our tents were near an entrance to go to the kitchen, he said it more than once. It kind of turned into a joke, whenever we saw each other later, we'd all try to say Merry Christmas before the other. We eventually rolled out of our tents with hangovers and went to the kitchen to make breakfast. We cooked bacon, eggs, oatmeal, and zucchini with onions, it was super good but didn't totally cure my aching head.

After a bit, we headed to the beach, which was a short walk down the road. We laid in the sand, the sun kept hiding in the clouds, but when it came out it was quite warm. We waded in the cold water then ended up walking quite far down the beach, picking up shells along the way. A family was playing cricket but with a plastic bat and ball. When we walked by them, Cassela jokingly said, hey don't hit me, and right after, the older son hit the ball with the bat and the ball hit Cassela in the ankle/heel region and she went down. He said sorry but it definitely hurt. We made our way back to the park after awhile.

We had a small salami, cheese, and cracker snack and then started to make Christmas sugar cookies. We found the flour and baking powder at the last holiday park in the "free bin" and bought the rest of the ingredients. We took turns mixing the dough with a fork because of course there was no mixer. We rolled it out using Cassela's cylinder shaped water bottle and used a few different sizes of glasses to make circular cookies. We used a butter knife to make hearts, squares, and trees. We were resourceful and used what we had in the small kitchen of the campground. There was a large party doing their dishes in the kitchen and they were wondering what we were making.

The dough made a lot of cookies and once they were all done baking, we made the frosting. It turned out pretty runny but still worked. We employed a few of the kids in the holiday park to help us decorate. Thank goodness we had extra hands to frost all of them. It was really fun conversing and hanging out with them and they seemed like they were enjoying it too. We cleaned up the mess and left a note with all the cookies for people to help themselves.

I had a lingering hangover headache all day so I was ready for quiet time at the pool. One of the young girls, Charlotte, who was helping with the cookies hung out with us in the pool area. We went back to the kitchen to make dinner. We cooked up burgers, green bean casserole, roasted broccoli and sweet potato, quinoa, corn, and rolls. It was a wonderful little feast. We did the dishes and were happy to find that all of our cookies had been taken. Afterwards, we played a round of Kings Cup with the girls in the camp and went off to bed shortly after.

Today felt more of like just a festive day, not necessarily Christmas. I've been away from home for Christmas before, and though it's only just a day, it is and always will be much better at home. Home, where it's usually a white Christmas and it's cold out. Oh well, life goes on.
