My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Morocco | Friday, January 11, 2013 | 5 photos

It all began when I was 8. I had lost a story-telling contest. I was apathetic for I was smug with the satisfaction of having told my story to people who enjoyed my tale and decided not to name me the victor. Most importantly, they listened.

I continued to tell stories through various means: drawing, music, mindless chatter, letters. But never had I possessed a more beloved tool than my camera. If a picture is worth 1000 words, it falls upon the photographer to find the right words. It isn’t easy to bring home stunning pictures of sights one beholds. But to execute the converse, to transport viewers to the scene of the shot, therein lies the challenge that fuels my passion for this art, to see from perspectives rarely explored, to learn to immortalise the intangible elements in something so simple as a photograph. This experience would reconcile my fervour for photography and writing, and hopefully help realise a dream to work for the likes of National Geographic and Life. I believe that a photograph should incite or subdue, to enchant or horrify, to evoke, and sometimes, provoke.

I am Justin and this is my story. I am now 24 but within me, a little storyteller of 8 lives on.
