A victim of the Yom Kippur war of 1973 and pockmarked with thousands of bullet holes, a Syrian mosque lies deserted deep in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights. The area was witness to intense fighting during the war and now lays waste to abandoned tanks and bunkers. To this day, the Golan Heights remains contested territory, with gun shots and artillery fire from the Syrian civil war well within earshot.

On the citadel walls of downtown Amman, a young boy passes the time playing with a homemade kite. As well as the many minarets that dot the horizon, homemade kites are a common feature of the Ammani skyline; offering a welcome and colorful break to the sprawl of low-rise buildings that cover the city. An elderly man sells the distinctive ‘sesame round bread’ at his stall in the Souk of the Muslim Quarter, Jerusalem. The Old City of Jerusalem is home to a some of the holiest sites in the world for Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike. This can lead to tension between the inhabitants, with the surrounding area of East Jerusalem playing host to the hugely controversial barrier wall that separates Israel from the Palestinian West Bank.
