Kampot

We have escaped Phnom Penh and arrived safely at Kampot. We took a hire car again, mainly to reduce the travel time. The road was horrendous, for about 100kms. They are in the process of putting a major road in, but I suspect it will take a long time with much blood sweat and tears. The dust from the road was incredible, either thick white or reddish, and at times you could not see much, including on-coming vehicles. The countryside in Kampot province is nothing less than beautiful, very lush, and a few mountains, which you don't see many of. We arrived around 11ish (am) to the lovely little town of Kampot which sits along the river. We are staying at a place called Mea Culpa, really clean, nicely decorated rooms, pretty gardens, for $20/night. We are the only guests at the moment, so its private and peaceful. I'm really impressed with the whole place. Last night we had dinner at a place called Rikitikitavi, which had great reviews, but I found them to be over rated. Their claim to fame is that most of the food is imported, which is odd given the amount of fabulous fresh produce available here, seemed like a pointless exercise to me, and increased the cost. The town itself is as pretty as a picture, and tonight we are going on a sunset boat ride up the river, should get some fab photos, if last night's sunset is anything to go by! Communication is a little difficult, no phone or internet at the guesthouse for us to use, and the internet place here shut early yesterday. Also half the letters are missing from the keyboard so its a bit tricky. The girls are fine, Billi has had a bit of tummy upset, but have got onto that and she is better today. Hayley,s Tassie tan has certainly attracted some attention. We seem to be a lot whiter than the other tourists, so stand out a bit, but the people are friendly enough. Congratulations to Mum, my bowling champ, missing our daily chats, and Sharyn, my hair is so buzzy I have completely given up! Miss you too! Love to all! We will be here for two more nights and have a trip to a place called Bokor Station tomorrow. Cheers for now!

Hi Joanne, Great to hear about your travels - a sunset trip on the river sounds fantastic. You wouldn't want a trip on the Derwent tonight, it's about 1degC!! It's going to be dynamite getting out of bed for the market tomorrow.
All is very well in the house and I'm finding it quite warm and very comfortable.
Cat is a little sweetie and comes in for a tour of the house each day and a cuddle and smooch. She purrs for about a minute and then wants to get down and on with life! I'm sure she is missing you though because she rushes upstairs for a look around before she eats. She looks very healthy and has such a beautiful soft thick coat of fur - a pretty little thing.
The builder/plumber/painter Michael was in this week measuring up and has the go ahead from the insurance to do the work in the bathroom so he will start next week. Be nice for you to come home to that all tidied up.
That's the news for now, keep well and happy in your travels,
Susan.

Impressed with this journal thang, you're good to write in it so much! Sounds like you're having a ball, hope El Zoro is behaving himself :)
All good here, bloody freezing but sunny days, & 4 days off, which I intent to enjoy. Work still chaos busy, usual shit, which you don't have to worry your pretty little heads over..
Anyway, have a big fat cold beer for me, and continue to have a fantastic time ( you lucky lucky bastards).

Hiya,
really sorry you did not find Rikitikitavi lived upto your expectations. We do make use of as much local produce as poss, and it is really only the beef and chicken that we get imported. This is because the local cows are very scrawny and except for the most choice cuts (which are on our specials board) we go for argentinian and aussie beef. The local chicken tastes good, but is very stringy so we use imported breast from thailand. Pork, fish and veg are all local except for strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. The food may be a little higher than usual for kampot in price, but our kitchen is run to western standards of cleanliness and we have gone for quality over all else.
Sorry again that rikitikitavi was a let down,
Yours,
Dom -Rikitikitavi owner
