John & Leianne's World Adventures

Lake Ticitaca

PERU | Saturday, 27 January 2007 | Views [1460] | Comments [5]

I have one correction from John. We ate alpaca on our anniversay  not lama.  Please excuse  typeos, this computer is trigger happy.

Last night we had the most amazing  dinner. It was fine dining and the  presentation was beautiful, I forgot to take a picture Kelly. John had steak, I had a chicken dish, we had  a bottle of wine and it was $40.

Today we were touring islands on Lake Ticitaca. It is the highest navigatable lake in the world at 3820 meters.  The first 2 islands were  floating islands made from reeds called the Euros Islands. The reeds are about  3 to 4 meters deep an they have to keep replacing them. The people that live there use the reeds to make  their houses, boats  and even eat them. Then the last island was a natural island. We climbed up to the top where it was 4000 meters high. We had lunch up there and then climbed down the other side.

Tomorrow we are off  to Ariquipa  on the bus. I forgot to tell the guy at our hostel to book first class so our  $10 tickets should be interesting.  Like John says its all about the experience. It takes 5 hours to get there, and we will be there three days, so you will hear from us there.

Hey Leianne, saludos from Victoria,

Will you be staying at La Casa de Melgar in Arequipa? If so, do give my love to Karina, si?

You'll find the most gorgeous alpaca garments in Arequipa and sometimes with a blend of alpaca and silk. Check out the prices vs those for similar garments in Canada - ack!

My favourite shop is Sol Alpaca across from the entrance to the Convento Santa Catalina; and if you should have a meal at El Turko, give my love to all.

Also, my house is at Boliva 402 behind the Convento....

Safe travels,
Sasha

ps. if you're back in Lima at some point, try the steaks at La Carreta - you'll think that you've died and gone to heaven - that is, if you MUST eat steak in Peru!

Try something Peruvian, si?

Do both and order Lomo Saltado instead :)

pps. just returned from seeing The Queen. The one from the United Kingdom...

This is to let your daugher who was concerned about her dad's glasses that there is a very sophisticated segment of Peruvian society and very wealthy - wonderful frames as well as good opticians are available everywhere and at a fraction of the price paid here for anything similar.

If possible, you might want to have John's prescription emailed to you "just in case"... ha ha ha

I have all my eyewear done in Arequipa.

Chau Chau - have fun and forget Peruvian wine - Pisco is the way to go - wait until you get to Chile and Argentina for fabulous wine - not to mention the amazing tango bars in Buenos Aires - are these in your plans? If so, you MUST take the ferry over to Montevideo.....

blah blah blah

Hello you two, it sounds like your trip is going great, looking forward to hearing about the next day and seeing pictures. Glad the Pisco is good, will get Garry to bring home more for a summer bash.
