A secluded attic suite in the Hotel Haus Hainstein had greeted our amazed gaze when we arrived, and from all 3 windows, high above mountain forests, we looked across the valley and up to the Medieval fortress palace of the Wartburg, beautifully illuminated as dusk descended late that night.
Awakening at first light, NO CASTLE! - was it a dream I wondered sleepily at 5.30am? Ah no, the mist shifted a little, revealing only the tip of the massive Wartburg tower.
