On Saturday evening we walked to a local Early Music Festival concert in a church near here. An appreciative audience of about 35 heard a group of 6 fine young local musicians give a delightful program of Medieval and Renaissance pieces arranged for recorders, Medieval fiddle, viol, Baroque guitar and percussion. All of the instrumentalists had excellent voices which blended seamlessly with the solo soprano and instruments. The recorder playing was especially notable, flowing and expressive with beautiful tone and tasteful use of a sinuous portamento. None of those present seemed to even notice the pounding beat from the loud outdoor rock concert going on in the neighbourhood!
