Sunday
6th September
Essaouira
At
breakfast this morning we were chatting with two Australian
travellers, a brother and sister (Steve and Jen) who are touring
Europe and Morocco for 4 weeks. Six degrees of separation! They
grew in Canberra, their parents now live in Tura Beach and have a
farm in Bemboka. Nic grew up in Canberra, his dad lives in Tura
Beach and the family had a farm in Bemboka. All discovered in a
little Riad in the Medina of Marrakech.
As
the day was turning overcast, it meant that we must be on the road
again. Mohammad and the magic carpet was ready to take us on the
road again, this time to Essaouira. Many miles of rural land dotted
with Eucalyptus trees and small villages was our vista.
Essaouira is a port city based around a 16th Century Portuguese sea
fortress. Our final Riad of the journey is found on the edge of the
city wall overlooking the Atlantic ocean. We arrived in our room to
the sound of thundering waves that were crashing on the battlements
below us. Out our window we can see the fortified bastions and
cannons of the fort. Living history.
This
afternoon we ventured to the beach but alas the clouds have moved in
and so we were unable to top up our tans but read our books on rented
lounges and an umbrella. Dinner was at a lovely local restaurant in
the medina where they served wine and spirits. Yummy.
