A story of northern lights, ancient Gwich'in culture and true wilderness
I am Jette from Dresden, Germany. I volunteer for an environmental organization called Wilderness International, that seeks to protect wilderness areas all over the world, by specifically in Canada.
I will live with the Gwich'in First Nations of Fort McPherson, north of the Arctic Circle, for five months. Together with Shayla Snowshoe and many partners, we are working to support the struggle of the protection of the Peel River Watershed, one of the world's last remaining wilderness area of the size of Scotland, and the traditional homeland of the Gwich'in. This pristine, beautiful land so rich of the stories of our ancestors is under severe threat to be fragmented, polluted and thus forever destroyed by mining.
Our work will include a cultural and conservational exchange between Gwich'in and German students as well as an expedition in the land.
Let's protect the last remaining natural jewels of this planet and fulfill our duty to look after the one and only Earth that we have and to look after our kids eventually!
