My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry

WORLDWIDE | Thursday, 3 February 2011 | Views [226] | Scholarship Entry

This is an entry from my personal blog as I don’t have any travel experiences written down... Hey, I’m new!

When I was young, everything seemed so black and white. I couldn't figure out how people ended up on jerry springer. Life just didn't seem THAT hard. I believed that if you got a college degree, found a partner, and bought a house that happiness was bound to follow.

However, as I made my way through life checking those things off, I realized that I wasn't happy at all. In fact, I was miserable. I began questioning this universally accepted path to happiness. I started seeking out new and different activities. I got my skydiving license, I started running, and I joined a competitive rowing crew. I believed that all I needed to do was find my niche, the thing that I was good at and that everything else would fall into place.

One day my job gave me the opportunity to move to India. It was the most amazing year of my life and was a major turning point in my life. I got to totally reinvent myself. I was silly. I was fun and funny. I was disorganized and adventurous. I wanted to believe that I just had to be myself and that everything would be okay.

The next phase of my life went something like this "if something scares me, then I HAVE to do it". So I started working on my paragliding rating, I discovered couchsurfing, I did my first sprint triathlon, I traveled to new cities by myself, I bungee jumped... those things felt solo good. For a while, I felt like I had finally found what I believed in.

This year I wanted to do something new so I went to burning man to see what the big deal was, but I just didn’t connect with it. It’s funny because I always felt like a fish out of water in Texas. I like weird art and music; I’m into the environment and wearing organic deodorant. I was pretty sure I was on the verge of having my Texas citizenship revoked. But now... now, I couldn't wait to get back to Texas and listen to sit by the pool, catch some rays and drink some beer.

After burning man, I thought really hard about what I believed in and as cliché as it sounds... I believe in the love of my family. No matter what, they are always beside me. The love that we have for each other will never change. Not with any relationship, child, job change, or crazy hair-brained idea I come up with. I love that they aren't interested in hearing me drone on about my last trip or my latest epiphany about life. They just want me to go to store with them and help pick a paint color. And really, they don't even want my opinion about paint color; they just want "me"... to be there beside them.
