Tasmania 8/02 to 19/02

TASMANIA from the 8th to the 19th of Feb

We almost missed the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport, which was early in the morning, because of a very good leaving party the night before. Once there, we got a car and head north west with MArion and Frederique on board.

First stop, Leven Canyon, advised by a local. It was supposed to be a small canyon but it ended up being a tiny canyon. Anyway beautiful view and great walks into the rainforest. On the road again, we went to Boat Harbour beach on the North West coast. it is the most beautiful beach we've ever seen, white sand and chrystal clear water !

Next destination, Stanley and it's Nut ( little volcanic mount of 400m) from where you get a wonderful sunrise. Then from North West to the south sometimes through gravel roads during 3hrs, we didn't see a lot of people it was a quite desertic part of the island.

Most of the wildlifeof the island is often seen dead on the roads! We managed to see quite a lot alive though, echidnas, wallabies, possums, wombats, pinguins, but for the famous devil of Tasmania only dead on the roads. We saw the Tiger snake, 4th most veinemous in the world and the Bluetongue, a kind of lizard with a snake head.

After few days away from civilisation, walking in the rainforest or on a part of the overland track of the Craddle Mountains, after wlking on beautiful enormous sand dunes, we finally got to Hobart, the biggest town of the island. Nice people and good food. There we dropped Marion and picked up Estelle and Christoph and we hit the road again heading for the East coast and its beautiful landscapes, beaches and not to forget, its excellent wine!!

Very relaxed people in this part of Australia which seems to be a country of its own. Very environmental frienly island and the people protects the fauna and flora as much as they can.

It was 10 days of discovery and enjoyment everyday, we loved it and where a bit worried about going to our next destination and going back to such a big city : Sydney!

Thanks Fred for your great pictures !
