Before I'd even checked into the hostel in snowy Salzburg i was already part of a crew of 6 random people heading to the ice hockey for a finals game. We got there just in time and went nuts along with the home crowd of the Red Bulls (the drink was started by a Salzburg bloke who sponsored, and then changed the name of, the local team). There were drums, weird songs sung in german that we had a go at singing even if we didn't know what the words were (we weren't even drunk), massive flags being waved and a dancing chick clad in bugger all on the zamboni after the first period. There was even a dance off at half time won by a chick who then managed to fall on her arse trying to get off the ice. It was an awesome night that ended in town trying to avoid the american spewing in the gutter out the front of the pub we were leaving.
The next night at the beer hall we ran into a bunch of americans and guess what, one of them was the girl we'd "met" the night before. What a trooper! This was my first introduction to the world of steins. 1L at a time isn't a bad way to drink beer. Better when ur in Austria rather than Australia and it doesn't get warm.
The next day I visited Hangar 7 which is a massive shed full of red bull sponsored stuff. It was a dream place for someone like me. There were F1 cars, motoGP bikes, planes, helicopters plus (and i donreally get the significance) an art gallery. And even better, because it was just a big red bull ad, it was free. Loved it!
Turns out there is something to do in Salzburg apart from Sound of Music tours. Thank christ for that!
