Burma is led by a military junta known as the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), renamed the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). Opposition parties are banned, but exist illegally.
As you can see, a building of the National League for Democracy, the major opposition party, was demolished by the military junta after the last elections, held on 27 May 1990. The National League for Democracy won the elections with 60% of the votes but the SLORC refused to acknowledge the results. The dictatorship of the military junta was born. And is still alive..
The next "democratic" elections (the governement sent military people without uniforms in the opposition parties) in Burma (Myanmar) will occur the 7 november 2010, after 20 years without any elections.
Burmese people avoid to talk about burmese politics in public to avoid to go to jail because there is spies everywhere. During the Monks Protest against the Governement in 2007, some monks disappeared, some were tortured and killed. Meetings are now banished. If you wanna know more about politics in Burma, you have to find a discreet place, and always let the burmese people lead the conversation about politics to avoid problems for them.
NB: I could went to jail just for taking such a picture in this political context. The few tourists are followed by spies, and guesthouses have to report to the police every hosted foreigner and his daily activity.
