old manali to simla

INDIA | Sunday, 14 October 2007 | Views [479] | Comments [3]

so this is officially the end of my "chilling out in the mountains" period.  tonight im' going to simla by overnight bus (2x2 'reclining' chairs).. after that to rishikesh for who knows how long.  maybe i'll run into this kid rahel was telling me about who's from colorado and likes to think.. i just endured a fiasco trying to open a bunch of pictures to resize them on this computer but it just takes to long so i'm afraid you'll have to wait.  i also need to buy rechargable batteries and a charger cuz i've gone through about four batteries per week here and i thought that might last me the whole trip.  repacked my backpack for who knows how many times now.. every time slightly different . hopefully this time more organized.  once i get to rishikesh i've just got to get rid of stuff from there cuz it will be warm from then on and hopefully it won't be too expensive to ship a bunch of things back.  my boots i might just give away but my jackets i'll need for the boston winter when i get home.

we shall see.. anyhow the last day and a half i spent reading - finished (and started) two books. wrote a ton in my journal. mostly boring philosophical meanderings for anyone else to read but for me they were fun to write.  at the end of that my conclsion was that i need to be in rishikesh asap so i may not even spend a day in simla. i have to check on the train status now.. so i'm afraid you'll have to excuse me.. i'm getting worse at this i know.. sorry for that.  hardest part is remembering what i've already mentioned and what i haven't..

oh.. met some more americans here.. one of them i might meet up with to go to varanasi - i got his email - that way varanasi will be easier.. but again.. we shall see.. this is india. time works differently (not that i was ever any good at planning / following through)  okay cheers the power's out so i'm going to send now.l

Hi Josh, it was to get your brief update...it sounds like it is sometimes difficult to write to your eager audience...that is fine...it is your JOURNEY.... just to know that you are healthy and SAFE is what I want to know mostly...... don't feel pressure to write a lot...It sounds like you are transitioning from cold to heat.... YIKES, I hope it is not too warm for ye!!Take care... Miss ya and love ya~Donna

Hi Joshua,
It is good to hear from you again and to hear again of your travels. Another train adventure, a change of pace, and a new day. Yea. Keep in mind that your outlook may also change your view, so continue to enjoy and reflect..aahhh too much head stuff - sorry, just have a great time!

Hey Josh,

Been following your travels with great interest since your sister gave me the URL, figured I got overlooked while you were busy leaving ;^)

I sent it along to Jason Azuma, who is also interested to read your adventures. Mostly I trip out on how the Internet has changed world-wandering. My favorite part I think was the disconnection and immersion in another reality, even though that was probably an illusion since even then satellite TV and pop radio followed us everywhere. Lord knows my family would have liked to have heard more from me than my ex-roommate in Paris telling them on the phone, "I think he's in Russia." Certainly following your wanderings vicariously is a thrill!

Amanda dropped me a nice little note the other day, it seems Thiara and Miguel are taking good care of her. Living in y'all's old neighborhood gives me plenty reminder of you both, although I must admit it's my Moral Reasoning requirement class, Comparative Ethics: Hinduism, Buddhism & Christianity that makes me think of you most, except you're like living the dream. Jesse Gonzales is in the class, and she (Anne Monius, Prof. of South Asian Studies at the Divinity School) assigns developing-world novels as well as theological and philosophical readings, since the former are more truly laboratories of ethics and individual human experience.

_Samskara_ is a famous one written in Gandhi's era about a small town rocked by revolution. Then I heard Salman Rushdie talking about his early work on the BBC the other day. So you see India is haunting us all.

Jeff turned out to be in Korean class, but I had to drop it because let's face it, I don't need any more languages and three classes is enough while working more than full-time. Anton is back from Houston, still in class but spending part of his time in Brooklyn with Chantal who is working at the Tibet House museum gallery there. That's pretty much the news from school! Try to stay out of trouble!! ;^) -J
