It may look sunny and clear when you wake up, but this island is known for frequent and unexpected rains. Rain stops very few activities of the people. They will even play football in a horrendous downpour, sloshing around in the resultant lake of a field.

The identity of an American Samoan is largely defined by their family name and village, much more than the individual. Tattooing these identities onto the body has been a long tradition on this small Pacific island.

Many men spend twelve hours a day sitting in the low seats of their trucks-converted-into-buses, transporting people from one end of the island to another, driving 25 miles per hour, and blasting all types of music. Some are the kindest guys you will meet on the island. Pati here waited for my roommate and I every day to take us to work in the morning.
