STOP "C" ON THE TRAVEL MAP (PART 2)
Monday 4/11/16
We headed 290 miles north for Roanoke, Texas. We were packed and ready to go just before San Antonio was hit with a rain storm. Perfect timing! The day went smoothly and by 5 PM we were checked into our site at the Northlake Village RV Park (http://www.northlakevillagerv.com). It’s a nice park and is close to the Texas Motor Speedway, although there aren’t any races going during the time we are here.
Tuesday 4/12/16
We investigated the historic Roanoke downtown. It’s like a restaurant row and highlights BBQ joints. The Roanoke Visitor Center and Museum used to be the Silver Spur Saloon in 1886, and also housed an upstairs brothel and dance hall. Of course we stopped in to find some things to do in the area (Joe was hoping to catch a glimpse upstairs). We had heard good things about a chicken place named “Babes Chicken Dinner House,” and decided to eat there for dinner. There is no menu; you just pick between fried chicken or chicken fried steak. Along with the selection comes all you can eat mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and homemade biscuits. It was so good and the atmosphere was very pleasant. http://www.babeschicken.com/our-kitchens/roanoke. Roanoke is a lovely town with new shopping and residential areas being built all around it.
Friday 4/15/16
After a late breakfast we headed southeast through Dallas near Ennis, a town known for fields of Bluebonnets (the State’s flower) and other Texas wildflowers. They are most prominent the second and third week in April, so it’s the perfect time for a drive. Every year Ennis sponsors a Bluebonnet festival for a weekend. You can find maps online that outline the different trails for cars and buses to follow. We drove through the loop that was closest to Dallas. It was a beautiful drive and is well marked with signs telling you which way to go. Of course we got off the loop somehow and went 20 miles out of our way once, but you know how that goes. On the trail we passed some Belgian horses; one being a colt. Interspersed with the Bluebonnets were Texas Paintbrushes and some Winecups. It was beautiful and well worth the hour there and back.
Sunday 4/18/16
The weather was rainy and cloudy most of the week. We had a little sun through the clouds on Friday, which was a nice break. After a stormy weekend, we are off to Oklahoma City tomorrow morning for a week stay.
