My Scholarship entry - Pictures from the Edge of the World

United Kingdom | Sunday, November 23, 2014 | 5 photos

I can't help it, wherever I go I'm constantly visualising the world as a series of pictures. I began image making as a way of documenting personal experience. Places discovered and communities encountered, could be shared through photography. Like many, I found photography's inherent ability to share powerful, and so it became my creative platform for storytelling.

Taken from my recent adventure, the images I've uploaded are indicative of this.

Twenty miles of the coast of mainland Shetland lays Foula. With a fascinating population of twenty-eight and not a single shop it remains one of the most remote permanently inhabited islands in the British Isles. Captivated by curiosity, I travelled to Foula to discover the island for myself. The resulting project stands as a photographic document of the landscape and inhabitants encountered.

This opportunity is the chance to experience the ultimate contrast in landscape and culture. Jason as a mentor, coupled with his experience in the field, would be invaluable in nurturing my knowledge and progression as a young photographer.

Funnily enough Foula's landscape featured not a single tree, the Peruvian Amazon would be an eye opener.
