Yaks are indispensable for transporting goods in the high altitude regions of the Himalayas. They can carry over 100 kgs of cargo over precarious terrain. Without them, I would have only made it to base camp with the clothes on my back.

On day five we spent another two nights at Dingboche acclimatizing at 14,800 feet. Cradled in a small valley with a village population of 200, there wasn't much to do there but find inventive ways to play hacky sack with our accompanying sherpas.

The burden of the Sherpa never failed to astound me. Even though their herculean feats were far beyond my human capacity, I was always inspired to persevere because of them. They are probably the single biggest reason I was able to make it to Everest Base Camp and back, and for that I'm forever humbled and grateful.
