A single tree is all that is left of a forest that once grew behind these coastal dunes. Over thousands of years, these dunes moved inland driven by wind and water. They have swallowed and smothered the ancient forest.

The arid environments of Australia tell many unique stories. They tell of ancient landscapes, of survival and of unforgiving elements. This image, part of a series on desolation and desertification, speaks to how dunes move – how they advance and retreat to the rhythm of the wind.

Here lies the remains of an early outback dwelling – broken rock littering the desert floor. This building, destroyed by the movement of the dunes, is successively hidden and revealed as a function of the wind. The image speaks to the human drama of survival in a challenging environment.
