I've never been a fan of slogan t-shirts but in the past week, three have caught my eye which I thought I'd share with you:
The first was bright pink and worn by a smooth-looking dude on a moped in Gabes on the east coast. I noticed him mainly because he very nearly ran me over, though that's not unusual here: we're forever dodging moped, taxis, small boys driving carts with donkeys. Unless we're in the truck and then everyone is dodging us. Anyway, the t-shirt. It was bright pink and in black letters it stated: 'I Am An Alcoholic'. And I'm struggling to find a beer for sale? Not fair.
The second was later that day, on the same street in fact, walking back to the Centre des Stages et des Vacances where we'd parked up for the night. A little haven in an otherwise fairly unattractive place. Three headscarved schoolgirls were walking towards us. Under her school uniform jacket, the middle one wore a black t-shirt with three huge white words: 'Sleep With Me'. Huw and I both did an involuntary comical cartoon double-take.
Third was yesterday, here in Douz. A man in his thirties scurried by in a hurry wearing a pale blue t-shirt emblazoned with just one capitalised word: 'GAY'. Make of this what you will.
Also, related to this blog post only by its sheer randomness and smile-inducing nature, sitting in an internet cafe right now, quarter to 11 at night, trying not to perspire (it's not true what they say about the desert being cold at night - at least, not in late May in Douz), they just played God Save the Queen at full blast on the stereo while I was skyping my family. Ah well, to bed, big day tomorrow.
