My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

There are so many exotic, colorful and outstanding places in the world, that when thinking about applying for this scholarship, I automatically started to think about the most exotic places I have visited. But then I remembered the advice that someone gave to young storyteller. Don’t write stories about distant and exotic places, strangers and miracles, what would never occur in daily life. Try to write something about your village, about people who are around you, about what is going on in their lives. And I decided that at first I want to try to create a story about familiar place and people, and only then I will learn how to tell about other lands and cultures. So I chose a place that is located 30 kilometers from the town where I was born.
I am geography student and most of all I like to explore the world, learn new things and I’m trying to find something special and unique at each place I visit. Returning from traveling, friends and family always ask to tell them all about the trip. I want to learn to take pictures so well, that pictures could speak for themselves and tell the story of each place better than words. For me assignment with National Geography would be like a dream come true – what else young geographer who is trying to learn how to capture something special about each place and who is looking for a direction in life could wish?
I grew up in the eastern part of Latvia and like the people, who come to the place in my pictures, I believe and I hope for the best. Winning this scholarship would show that dreams come true! Even for people from such a small country as Latvia!
