Yes this the largest site we have seen, when compared to others and yes is has some the best preserved ruins in Mexico, however it left us feeling very underwhelmed and somewhat disappointed.
This is probably due to the fact that the site has been setup to cater for the thousands of tourists that make the day long trek from either Cancun or Merida. As an example, our hotel was named The Mayaland Hotel and as we went to lunch with the hundreds of others, we were greeted by seemingly local dancers stomping their feet on wooden boxes while balancing trays with full bottles of beer and glasses on their heads. I didn't the Mayans did that.
The whole setup that supports Chichen-Itza, just made it very tacky and cheap. Anyway, we have been there and done that, where too next.
We just feel there have seen more authentic ruins on our trip.
