Taxco

MEXICO | Saturday, 30 November 2013 | Views [343]

We spent a couple of nights in beautiful Taxco - an old silver mining town built down the side of a mountain. Steep narrow cobbled streets & terracotta-roofed white buildings.  And in the middle an amazing ornate cathedral - we had an up-close view from our balcony.  Pretty nice!  Taxco is also home to 296 white VW beetle taxis! And every other car is a VW beetle as well.  The front passenger seats are removed for luggage. Funny to watch a constant parade of vee-dubs through the one-way streets.  Apparently they used to be made in Mexico.  We love the evenings in the town plazas (zocalos).  Everyone comes out and spends family and friends time on the streets with a real party atmosphere. Grilled corn on the cob, churros (yum), balloon sellers, music. It's fantastic.  My Spanish vocabulary is increasing every day.  And Paul was very proud of himself the other day when he managed to buy two pasties with ham & cheese! He came out of the shop with the pasties hoisted like a flag and a huge grin on his face.  His effort before that had been to confirm with the bus ticket seller that we had to depart from Sala 2 (gate 2). Unfortunately instead of "sala", he said "salsa" so the English version of the conversation was like this:

Bus ticket seller: "Your bus departs from gate 2."

Paul: "OK, sauce 2."
