Snow and Sand: A Canadian Account of Travels Through Oman

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Worldwide | Tuesday, December 11, 2012 | 5 photos

My name is Sam Hoffe and I’m currently enrolled in the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, studying photography. I’m working towards my dream of becoming a travel/editorial photographer. I love to travel and I can't get enough of it. Being in such different places is surreal for me. I love being immersed in a different culture, in a foreign land and being stimulated by different sights and sounds. I shoot landscapes, nature, architecture, and abstracts, plus candid portraits that show a person’s true identity. It is my dream job to work for National Geographic and be sent around the globe to document rare, remote and unique places that not many get to see and tell a story through my lens, be it a simple one or something with weight and emotion. I want to shoot subjects that people will be interested in and care about. I want to make Oman accessible to those who may not choose it as their first travel destination. I want to hunt down the hidden gems and bring home the beauty of the geography and culture. But most importantly, I want to create images that have an essence that is not tangible, like a great film has an essence and feel to it. To be chosen for this scholarship would be an opportunity critical in helping me reach my goal of working for Nat. Geo. and developing a portfolio I can take pride in. I would be honored to work alongside an industry veteran who can help guide me in the right direction, offer criticism and help me take a monumental step towards achieving my dream. Doing this would be a taste of my dream and not many people can say they have experience that. Thank you for your time.
