Mining operations have contributed a lot to the environmental damage of the nation’s forest, and have the greatest impact on the landscape, leaving the land desolate and bare.

Along the river entrances to National Reserves, guard posts are set up to protect the orang-utans from poachers and the forest from illegal loggers.

A man clutches the sand containing his living. Gold is extracted from the sand. After many filtration processes, mercury - despite being illegal in Indonesia and damaging to the miners’ health, is used to extract the gold.
