Hasitha Tudugalle - Photo by Suyen Moncada
Originally from Sri Lanka I moved to Sydney in April 2011. Since young, I had a camera with me. a crazy idea that one day I could have a biography of my life in pictures. I never took photography seriously until I got my DSLR in May 2011 to explore Sydney with the camera as my companion. At the Botanical Gardens one day, I saw birds I had never seen before. I started taking pictures of them. It brought back memories of when I was about 7. My dad built a cage in our garden in Sri Lanka and we got about four lovebirds. They quickly turned into about 15 of them. I had a book called Birds of Prey with pictures of birds. I used to draw and paint these birds but never actually read the book as I was more into art and painting. I grew up watching channels like National Geographic and Animal Planet. I remember my first nature program David Attenborough’s Life on Earth when I was 8 years old. I also enjoy photographing events such as music concerts, parties, festivals as well as landscapes and places.
I feel that this scholarship would be an excellent opportunity for me to improve my skills as well as to experience being a travel photographer and meeting people. There would be no limit to what I could learn working with an experienced, award winning photographer such as Jason Edwards. The knowledge gained working alongside him would be invaluable.
My dream is to have one of my photographs on the cover of National Geographic magazine one day.
