Coron: Where there are no streets

There’s a secret hideaway where seawater and fresh water meet. The brave may swim—or dive during high tide—through the narrow pass to reach the inner lake of the Twin Lagoon. The cautious may climb through the makeshift wood ladder to catch a glimpse of what lies beyond the jagged limestone cliffs.

Joel and Mario Reyes, former Palawan governor and Coron mayor respectively, have gone into hiding following the killing of a media man in 2011. Despite this, however, guides claim Coron is a still peaceful town where travellers are perfectly safe. In fact, there are very few major crimes reported here. Even the dreaded local terrorist group, the Abu Sayyaf, have failed to reach the shores of Coron. The people are very protective of the place; they consider themselves stalwarts of the environment.

The Calamianes Group of Islands, about an hour’s ride from Coron by boat, is the ancestral domain of the Tagbanua tribe. Banol Beach is one of the few pocket beaches in the area where travellers are allowed to set foot and enjoy the white sands and clear waters.
