Releasing one's 'krathong' is a surprisingly complex affair, with mud, current, and wind being factors in the riverside. Waist-deep in the muddy waters, this Chiang Mai local ensures the successful release of the lit 'krathongs' down the river by guiding it safely away from the banks to join the stream of others.

Loi Krathong is best enjoyed with the company of other people. Like this couple photographed, families, friends, and couples light their 'krathongs' together along the riverside.

Loi Krathong is easily one of the most festive events of the year. Every November, visitors gather in Chiang Mai to release floating lanterns called 'krathongs' down the Ping River. Because of the nature of the festival, with participants sending their wishes and hopes with their 'krathongs' down the river, the festival is infused with a positive and buoyant atmosphere.
