My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Vietnam | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | 5 photos

I photographed this border region in Vietnam when I lived in Thailand. Travelling and photography are my two loves in life, when I'm not travelling, I'm planning my next trip - it's all I think about. It was my grandfather who ignited this passion in me - he was a scientist, intrepid traveller and photographer who taught me about cameras. At uni I practically lived in the photo lab. I always dreamt of travelling by myself - of landing in a strange country all alone, somewhere I didn't speak the language, somewhere I didn't know a soul. It was a personal challenge that I felt a huge compulsion to fulfil. I worked, saved and bought a one way ticket for my 22nd bday. From Indonesia I travelled for 3 years through to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. I shot over 100 rolls of film in the first 2 mths and never looked back. I've since lived twice in Europe and Asia and have spent many years adventuring all over the world. Travel is my way of connecting with myself and humanity, of realising the universal truths - at the core there really are no differences between us. We are all human and we all share the same fundamental desires - health, happiness, connectedness. Travel makes me feel connected to life. It feeds my soul. It strips life back to basics. Behind the lens, I seek the truth and beauty in other people, places and cultures. I hope my photos inspire people to open their minds and see that there is more than one way to live a life.

About freespirit5

A Black H'mong girl daydreams - perhaps of her future. There aren't many opportunities for girls from the hill-tribe groups which are marginalised in Vietnam.
