The Royal Exhibition Building was designed by the same architect as the State Library nearby, and the dome was inspired by the Duomo in Florence. The building fell into disrepair and was almost demolished in the 1950's, but was gradually restored, and only gained its Royal designation in 1984, surprisingly.
