Striking architecture in Federation Square, across the street from Flinders St. Station. Fed Square was only built in 2002, before that it was an open train yard in the heart of the city. A roof was built over the tracks, complete with shock absorbers to diminish the noise of trains below, and a grand public space unveiled above.

Flinders Street Station, Melbourne's original, still a hub for city transit and a bustling hub of activity.

Locals are quite divided apparently on the modernist look of Federation Square (called the “deconstructivist” style), but it has certainly quickly become Melbourne's great meeting place. Hard to believe just a few years ago nothing like this existed in the city. The complex comprises live theatres, the Australian national cinema, a radio station, and the National Gallery of Victoria, amongst many cafes and restaurants. The building centre-right features a giant screen where big sporting events and other televised events are shown for free.
